Power to The People

Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, born February 25, 1925 served as the President of Nigeria’s Second Republic 1979–1983, after the handover of power by General Olusegun Obasanjo’s military government. He worked as a teacher for a brief period before entering politics in 1954.

The Shagari administration was plagued by allegations of corruption and Nigeria saw a level of corruption never experienced in its history, including allegations of electoral fraud in the 1983 elections. A decline in world oil prices, deterioration in the national finances, and endemic religious and political violence lead to the regime becoming deeply unpopular with Nigerian citizens. General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew Shagari on New Year’s Eve in 1983.

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, born 20 November 1957 is the 14th Head of State and current President of Nigeria. Prior to his role as President, he served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Governor of Bayelsa State and Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Jonathan was born in what is now Bayelsa State to a family of canoe makers. Before he entered politics in 1998, he worked as an education inspector and lecturer.

The Jonathan administration is plagued by allegations of corruption and Nigeria is experiencing a level of corruption never experienced since the Shagari administration.
