It obviously takes a brave man to go into politics in Nigeria.

I would say it is mostly for show. In the last 15 years there has been only one politically motivated killing in Nigeria that of the Minister of Justice Bola Ige he was done in his home so you know how that goes. Years after they are still pointing fingers. Nigeria has strict gun laws and the average Nigeria has probably never touched a gun in their lives and that includes me. The most that happens to politicians is they get pelted with rocks.
The first thing corrupt people do in Nigeria is build prisons for themselves which they call homes. These homes have electrified 10foot fences with elaborate security systems backed with maybe 3 to 6 security men. Something about stealing public funds triggers paranoia.
