What exactly do they teach Nigerians about the transatlantic slave trade?
For instance, in Suriname we are thought that:
1. Europeans 1st enslaved the Native Americans, but they were too weak for the work, so they set sail for West and Central Africa because the people there were stronger
2. There they traded European guns, mirrors, beads and alcohol for African people. Some of these people were also kidnapped.
That’s the story. It’s still very Eurocentric, still full of inconsistencies and blatant lies even though we had a revision of some subjects including History, after we gained our Independence from the Netherlands.
What are you guys taught over there?

Am sorry but not much, the outside world may know more about the slave trade than the average African. History was one of my favorite subjects in high school but our curriculum focused on Sub-Saharan history. The next time I see my high school history teacher who later became the school principal I would ask him why this was so.
The Europeans never enslaved the Native Americans they were too busy fighting and killing them for their land. Very difficult to enslave someone on their own land, they had to get Africans an ocean away from their homeland. Africans were more “suitable” for working hard under the sun for no pay. Of course that was the beginning of genetic engineering. Africans were cross breed to breed the strongest ones for hard labor. During this period slaves were 90% of the American gross national product.

Thank you…! In my country we did have Native American slaves though. And we did get a little bit of African History. Egypt (Suezcanal, Anwar Sadath), Ethiopia (Haile Selassie and Italy) of course Nelson Mandela and the fight for justice in South Africa and Zimbabwe, a little bit about Lumumba and the Congos, Liberia, and also a little bit, it was literally one sentence or two about the Nigerian Civil war.
That was it. It’s not much, but still something. Thanks again. Stop by my blog too sometimes..I have lots of interesting stuff about the link between the Diaspora and the continent..:-)
